At Jom Serve, our heart is to serve refugees in Malaysia with compassion and respect.
Currently there are four strands to our work:
Community initiatives
Our approach is to come alongside communities and respond to their felt needs. This can involve co-ordinating with local partners to deliver practical support, running a series of ESOL classes or something different.
Education Support
Refugees cannot access free state education in Malaysia so communities form their own learning centres. We provide education support and training to refugee learning centres. This can range from teacher training to providing safe spaces for physical education.
Supporting women
Many refugee women arriving in Malaysia have experienced different levels of trauma. Our initiatives with women aim to help them discover that they are uniquely created and gifted. We provide a weekly space where women create together. This safe space promotes well-being by building resilience and community among participants.
Maternal health
Many refugee women arrive in Malaysia without any formal education and marry at a young age. Many expectant mums therefore do not know what to expect when giving birth in Malaysia. We provide a four week maternity course covering pregnancy, labour, breastfeeding and information around registering the baby’s birth. Most of this support takes place in the community itself, ensuring women face no barriers to attending. At the end of the course women receive a bag of baby essentials.
